Symbols of
Font
A ceremonial basin used for baptism, traditionally placed near the church entrance.  The font at St Luke’s is the first thing you see as you enter the church.

The oil
The oil used at Baptism to anoint the child is chrism, a mixture of olive oil and perfume, usually balsam. The oil is consecrated by the Bishop on Maundy Thursday.

The water
Water is the main symbol of Baptism. Water is vital to life and all the major religions use it in some way. We need it to survive. We need it to wash.
The Paschal Candle
A new Paschal or Easter Candle is lit each Easter to signify the rising of Christ from the darkness of death.  The candle is  normally placed by the font and is lit at Baptism.  As a sign of the new light that the newly baptised represents, they are given a candle lit from the Paschal candle.
